Environmentally Friendly Lanyards: Everything You Need to Know

Lanyards are hugely popular and have hundreds of uses both for workplaces and leisure, as such you may be wondering about their eco-friendly credentials. Lanyard usage is diverse and varied, some people wear the same lanyard every day for work, other times a lanyard is used once then forgotten about. As such, it is important to consider the environment for what may be a single-use item on occasion. Fortunately, we have an array of environmentally friendly lanyards available to order. In fact, eco-friendly lanyards are some of the most popular options that we have available. But what are eco lanyards, what are they made of, and are they as good as standard polyester lanyards? Keep readying to find out more.

Why Eco-Friendly Lanyards?

Concern is rising about the throwaway nature of western society, and the impact that this is having on the environment. From excess rubbish that may take hundreds or even thousands of years to breakdown, to materials, energy and chemicals used in the manufacturing process people are increasingly aware of their purchasing habits and how it impacts the planet. As such greener options are being found, both in terms of materials and the manufacturing process to make the production of many products more environmentally friendly; and lanyards are no exception.

There are earth friendly lanyard options that would suit all requirements, and standard choices can be replaced with an eco-lanyard; look out for special offers that run occasionally giving a free upgrade to the earth friendly option. Our top environmentally friendly lanyards are:

Materials of Earth Friendly Lanyards

Polyester is the standard material for most lanyards. Traditionally polyester is a synthetic (man-made) fabric that is primarily produced from petroleum. However, textile manufacturers striving to improve their green credentials have formulated a

way to create polyester from plastic bottles. Most well known in the sportswear industry, plastic bottles are recycled into polyester that is then made into football kits and other team wear.

Utilising this method, whether to manufacturer lanyards or clothing, is doubly efficient. Single use plastic bottles are one of the biggest issues for the environment. Did you know that they take up to 450 years to decompose! The more plastic bottles, the more space that is required for landfill, and that doesn’t even consider the issues caused for animals and wildlife from improperly discarded bottles. Recycling the bottles into fabric, helps to eliminate many of these issues.

Creating polyester in the first instance results in chemical and toxic by-products that pollute water and are harmful to health. There is also a large use of energy in the process to make polyester that is contributing to the greenhouse effect and global warming. As such, by reusing plastic materials instead of making new ones the whole process has much less of a harmful impact on the planet.

Some lanyard options discard synthetic fabrics entirely. Natural textiles will decompose faster leaving a lighter impact on the planet. Such fabrics include our Bamboo lanyards and Plant Silk Deluxe option that is made from the waste stems of grain crops; both are made from plant fibres, that grow naturally and are turned into eco-friendly lanyards.

Eco Manufacturing Processes

While synthetic fabrics decomposing very slowly is a huge concern for the environment, another factor to consider is the manufacturing process. Manufacturing synthetic materials uses large amounts of water, energy, and other chemicals. When producing earth friendly lanyards this process has also been adapted to reduce environmental impact.

Along with reduced usage of water, natural dyes are used to reduce the amount of chemicals that are used during the process of manufacturing eco-lanyards. Of course, manufacturing products in mass quantities, at a price that businesses are willing to pay, creates a conflict with making the environment a priority. However, all earth friendly lanyards are manufactured in as considerate a way as possible, while maintaining a reasonably low cost for the end consumer.
